How to layer clothes: outfits for cold, warm and in-between days

How to layer clothes so you stay warm without looking bulky: thin to thick, short to long, which fabrics work, and layered outfits for spring, autumn and winter.

Published 24 October 2026

To layer clothes well, go from thin to thick and from close-fitting to loose: a thin base layer next to the skin, a middle layer for warmth such as a shirt, knit or cardigan, and an outer layer such as a jacket or coat that's big enough to go over the rest. Each layer should be a little longer or a little shorter than the one beneath it, so you can see the layers instead of a bulky block. Let the edges show on purpose, such as a shirt collar over a jumper or a hem under a jacket, and keep the colours to a narrow range so the layers look planned. Layering also handles days that start cold and end warm, because you can take one piece off and still have a complete outfit. What are the three layers?

On mild days you need two of the three. On cold days you need all three, and the base layer may be thermal.

How do I layer without looking bulky?

  1. Thin under thick. A fine knit fits under a jacket; a chunky knit needs a coat cut for it.
  2. Fitted under loose. Keep the inner layers close to the body and let the outer one be roomy.
  3. Vary the lengths. A short jacket over a longer shirt, or a long coat over a cropped knit, shows each layer.
  4. Keep the bottom half simple. When the top is layered, straight or slim trousers balance it.
  5. Belt or open the outer layer. An open coat makes a long line down the body; a belt shows the waist.

Which colours work for layering?

Stay close. Shades of one colour, or two neutrals plus one colour, look calm when several pieces show at once. A camel coat over a cream knit and a white tee is an easy example. If one layer is bright, keep the others neutral. Read how to choose colours that go together for more combinations.

What should I wear on days that start cold and end warm?

Choose layers that each work alone. A T-shirt under an open shirt under a light jacket means you can take off the jacket at lunch and the shirt in the afternoon, and still look dressed at each step. Avoid a base layer you wouldn't wear on its own.
