How to build a capsule wardrobe from clothes you already own

Build a capsule wardrobe from what's already in your wardrobe: how many pieces you need, how to choose them, and how a virtual closet and AI avatar help.

Published 24 October 2026

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes that all go together, so almost any top works with almost any bottom. The usual size is 25 to 40 pieces for a season, counting shoes and outer layers. You don't have to buy a new one. The best capsule comes from clothes you already own and like wearing. Pick a base of two or three neutral colours, add one or two colours that suit you, and keep pieces that work with at least three others. A virtual closet makes this much easier. In Flamingo you photograph each piece once and it is cut out and tagged, so your whole wardrobe sits on one screen. You can lay out the capsule, ask Flamingo for outfits made only from those pieces, and try any combination on your free AI avatar before you wear it.

How many pieces should a capsule wardrobe have?

There's no fixed number. A common starting point for one season:

Bags, belts and jewellery usually don't count. Start larger and remove what you don't reach for.

How do I build a capsule from my own wardrobe?

  1. Pull out what you wore in the last two months. Those are your real favourites.
  2. Choose your colours. Pick two or three neutrals, such as navy, grey, camel, black or cream, and one or two accent colours. Your colour season tells you which shades suit you.
  3. Keep pieces that pair with three others. If a top only works with one pair of trousers, it's not capsule material yet.
  4. Fill gaps last. Once the capsule is laid out, you'll see what's missing, often a light layer or neutral shoes. Buy only that.
  5. Wear it for a month. Swap out anything you avoid, and note what you missed.

How does a virtual closet help?

A virtual closet, or digital wardrobe, is a photo catalogue of your clothes in an app. With everything visible at once:

How many outfits can a capsule wardrobe make?

More than you'd expect. Ten tops and five bottoms that all match already make fifty top-and-bottom pairs before you count layers and shoes. The rule that everything matches is what multiplies them. For ways to find those combinations, read outfit ideas from your own closet.

Should I try new pieces on before adding them?

Yes, especially online. Try the piece on your Flamingo twin next to clothes you already own. If it doesn't work with at least three of them, it doesn't belong in the capsule. Try-ons are an AI image, so they show colour and proportion; check the shop's size guide for fit.

Can I have a capsule for each season?

Yes. Many people keep a core of all-season pieces, such as jeans, a white shirt and a blazer, and rotate around a dozen pieces in and out each season. With a virtual closet the off-season pieces stay visible, so you don't forget them when the weather turns.
